Israeli rabbis tackle smoking
Smoking is now forbidden by Jewish law.

An Israeli movie critic said Adam Sandler's movie, YOu don't Mess With The Zohan, inaccurately portrayed Israelis. There is more to Israelis besides eating hummus, fornicating and killing Arabs, he said.
What else is there, you ask? Cellphones and cigarettes.  Israelis are notorious for having these in their hands (cellphones moreso than cigarettes, but still, you get the point).  So it'll be interesting to see the reaction to this ruling and if anything actually happens.

stop and smell
How often do you take time to read a little poetry?  Us neither.  But since we sometimes are trying to think of what to post, it might be a good way to do just that--dust off the Coffee-Table-Books and see what poetry we can find to enjoy!  We were looking for one something about the Wonderful Summer Fragrance (the Linden trees you can smell everywhere), but this is as close as we could get... it mentions "autumn calm", but it's obviously hot weather...

CONTINUATION

Incessant tropic winds that pass
    Bestir the grass,
And whisper in the autumn calm
    The shepherd's psalm
Of life beyond the somber scene,
Where pasture fields are always green.

Nearby enduring blossoms shine
    From out a mine:
The ruby and the rhodolite
    Without a blight;
The purple, red and yellow quartz
That bloom for ages in the arts.

And, nearer still, a runlet sings
    Of hidden springs;
The constancy of their supply
    That falls from high.
Is't Immortality that speaks
This faith through zephyrs, rocks and creeks?
--Willis Hudspeth

okay so my memory of the past week is hazy at best so i can't remember how much i updated about the plumbing issue.

but just to recap:
brown water out of the hot water system
downstairs neighbour complaining of leak
15 plumbers and phone calls later, we have plumbers over
they have a look, declare it's a burst pipe
come back 3 days later (or something)
dig big holes into the lounge and the bathroom
declare they cannot find the burst pipe
stuff holes with newspaper
send other plumbers in this morning, very, very early in the morning
they make AN INSANE AMOUNT OF MESS, remove tiles in the kitchen and bathroom, dig more holes, remove the laundry sink, remove most taps, dig holes in several CUPBOARDS, leave a ridiculous amount of DUST EVERYWHERE, remove blocks from the WALL so apparently, it looks really bad and also, there's pipes outside the apartment now (it was dark when i got home) and it's really fugly (THERE'S ALSO PIPES INSIDE THE FUCKING CUPBOARDS, WTF, WTF, WTF).

...i nearly had a nervous breakdown at work when my sister sent me the pictures she was taking while they were MAKING MORE HOLES.

my kitchen is currently unusable, there's dust EVERYWHERE, dishes, pots, pans that they've taken out of cupboards lying just about everywhere.

but it was all okay. i managed to shower even if they moved the shower head and it's an old one that you need to move with a wrench, which i do not have since i gave my brother his toolbox back but whatever, clean water came out, i showered etc.

AND THEN

...i went into the bathroom just now to wash my hands and take my contact lenses out (i'd used the tap earlier but not the hot water one) AND GUESS WHAT?

NO. HOT. WATER. !1111!!!11111!111!! I THINK THEY FORGOT ABOUT THE BATHROOM SINK.

oh boy, i'm not going to work tomorrow until they turn up (they still have holes to fill, tiles to put back on etc) AND I TELL THEM TO FIX IT.

WTF :|

All Dogs Go To Heaven
Words cannot describe how much I love this movie. It was like.. the best animated movie I had ever seen in my childhood, and everytime I watch it, I'm shedding tears in the end. Of course, when I saw that there were caps up in [info]dj_capslock, I had to nab them!

So, darlings.. 65 icons of the cutest movie ever. Comment with specifics and credit is optional!

beauty in sadness
The Mom got to find out what our "local cancer centre" is like today--that's why we're late posting.  Someone at our church is organizing rides for a lady who has to go for radiation almost every day of the week, for 33 treatments in all.  So neat of them to do that; but when the lady said "thank you", thanks was due to her as well:  she allowed others the blessing of helping her!

Anyway, the cancer centre is beautiful.  There's a HUGE waiting room, an atrium with lots of light coming in, a well-known & loved deli with tables, and some tables in a lovely alcove outside, lots of comfortable chairs, a table with various puzzles for people to work on while they're waiting, etc.

But The Mom went over to the hospital part and instead of waiting, visited another person from the church.  This guy went in for a simple operation a year ago, and hasn't gone home yet.  He's been having continuous intestinal problems, which may be partly due to his paralysis slowly increasing.  He was paralyzed 30 years ago when he had radiation treatment on a little tumour in his back... so he's not all that excited when people say "isn't technology wonderful?"  It was good to see him though, and realize that he has not completely given up hope, even though both his mother and his sister have passed away since his hospitalization (his sister was only 50, but had fought breast cancer for 15 years).  He's holding on to his memories, and the fact that he does have a good day every once in awhile.  He asked for a little prayer-time, and even smiled a few times, causing The Mom to comment that it was a beautiful smile!  She's very glad she went there today.

Walk to Rivendell:  We enter a fold too deep to leave, so follow it SE to the Withywindle.  It's about 4 pm.

Lyrical icon suggestions!
Hey, darlings! Happy Summer and Happy belated Independence Day! FYI, the interest meme is still going on so comment in there if you haven't yet!

I'm going to be making some lyrical icons soon and for that, I have a community I made a while back called [info]lyricsforicons. It's been inactive, yes, but I'm hoping to start it up again. I know people have certain lyrics they would love to see... well, instead of posting them in comments here, which the entries can eventually get lost... journal that community and post them there! :)

It's not only for suggesters but also for also for any other icon-makers that are looking for inspiration.

Right now, I would definitely love more ideas posted there since I'll be making more icons soon.

OMG, THERE WAS SLASH ON BORDER SECURITY JUST THEN.

this NZ guy was being interrogated by custom because he said he didn't have any criminal convictions but he did (well, he didn't do jail do they can't have been that bad) and they were thinking of refusing him entry but then he explained that he really wanted to stay because he was having an extramarital affair with the woman who was travelling with him and they came to australia for a weekend getaway and ...

...they let him in (go australia, hehe). when he was told his visa wouldn't be cancelled by the (male) custom officer, he went:
"I could kiss you!"

and the custom officer replied: "Please don't."

...how sad is it that i totally giggled when he said i could kiss you and HOW SAD IS IT THAT I'M POSTING THIS ON LJ?

sermon notes
Our speaker today was one of our missionaries, a young girl who will be married in less than 3 weeks--the day before the wedding that THIS family will travelling north for.

She has a heart for Muslims, and middle-eastern people, and is presently working in the UK.  Her husband works for the same organization.  Our lay-pastor hinted that they set a good example in the UK, for us here in Canada:  ministering to the immigrants who have come to us rather than complaining and worrying about them "taking our jobs".  What stood out for me, is the way God has truly laid these people on her heart, that being a good indication of what God wants you to do/who to minister to!  For The Mom, it's children... but then, kids have a way of getting into EVERYONE's heart!

So the guys did lots of shopping yesterday, plus LOTS of eating, from what we hear!  (It sure is nice to hear Sam talking about cinnamon buns, and ordering up hot dogs & hamburgs for next weekend, etc.)  The Mom got lots more picture work done, but there's still more to do.  That has to get caught up, because come July 26th, there will be thousands more pictures to play with!!  (from a "Cinderella Wedding".)

Walk to Rivendell:  We keep turning east, and lose our direction!

State of Merrin address:
So I'm back from Texas. Flights went off without a hitch and I'm slightly on my way to forgiving American Airlines for the snafu that was the flight back from Jamaica. Sammy's happy and healthy and well fed, and more importantly her litter box has actually been emptied since I was here. I think she's grown at least ten inches. She seems HUGE now, and I can't tell if it's really her growing or just the fact that I played with so many kittens on the ranch. Natalie is healthy, idk about the happy. She's pretty much as grumpy as ever.

HOWEVER. There is a dead, dead, dead, DEAD Honda Civic with my name on it out in the parking lot. *heaves huge sigh of the beleaguered* My friend Schmamy (name changed to protect the innocent), who is a very lovely person otherwise (especially considering she got up at 4:30 in the morning to take me to my flight on Monday) neglected to turn off the headlights when she got back to her house and my car was dead, dead, DEAD when I attempted to drive it home tonight. She jumped it and I drove it around for 35 minutes, but that was not NEARLY enough time. I turned it off when I got back to my apartment and it just died instantly. Like, no interior lights or anything. So I don't know if that just means I need to keep it connected to the other battery longer or if I actually need a new battery at this point. I do know that Schmamy's buying if it's a new battery. I can't afford that crap. Not right now.

BLAH. It had to be something, I suppose.

In other news, my grandmother is craaaaaazy cakes. CRAAAAAAAAZY. Oh the stories.

yeah so i failed at LJ this week.

i haven't been reading my friends page properly for a week, i'm pretty much at skip*insert an insane amount here*, it was my week to cook and then i can't remember what else i did but i think i spent a lot of time outside my apartment as well which explains the disastrous state of my bank account and then i got sick so i was too tired to LJ anyway and today facebook took over my brain so yeah.

i'll be back this week, it's my sister's turn to cook :)

also, i've probably been talking more shit than usual (some of you will have noticed) this past week, i was TERRIBLY tired and pretty spaced out all week (i won't even tell you about how i totally forgot to pay for my coffee the other day and wondered why the cashier was staring at me expectantly).

next week, i'm getting up early and driving to the train station heading out with scarves and beanies and umbrellas so i don't walk in the rain/get sick by the wind again, yes? :|

People are Doing Things
Sam and Rej are off shopping today, with [info]drop9, so The Mom is looking forward to turning her music up LOUD!  Like a teenager!  And it gets worse:  she might also SING, and... DANCE!!  Not things she gets to do while People are around to hear.

First however, there are the dishes, brailling out (via computer) the scripture reading for tomorrow, scanning in the book for Rej to read... so we'll see how much time she has left after all that.

OTHER People Who Are Doing Things?  Pappy, Randy & Jonathan (The Mom's father, brother, and brother's son) are Doing the Meech Lake Triathalon! Randy will do the swim, his son Jonathan the bike, and Pappy the 6.4 K "run"/WALK... WAYTOGO guys!!!

Walk to Rivendell:  We are crossing a series of deep folds running SE.
